Amazing that you can walk from town into the desert and see these amazing markings. Easy flat walk that's dog friendly or more arduous climb with a view. Not to be missed. 20 minutes or an hour of hiking.
Free amazing place where you will find drawings on top of volcanic stones made hundreds of years ago. Everything is free, even helpful guides they’ll suggest routes and give you maps.
The visitor center is just the the. There's 3 other spots with petroglyph that you'll hasbe to drive to. Once you get there then you'll have to walk to see the images. It's OK if you're cool with walking. I'll take their word that the pictures are actually old.
All the rangers were really nice. They were eager to help and gave lots of information. There are several hikes so make sure to get a map. Let the rangers know how much time you have and they will help you pick the best hike.
There were lots of parking spots and not many people when I went there. The ranger was in an outdoor kiosk and provided helpful info on visiting all the units. The movie was also outside. The park store was inside. There are also native plants with labels outside that were interesting.
**Important: there are no trails here, the sign at the base of the visitor center has information on the 4 trails (3 where you can see petroglyphs), which have their own trailheads that are a driving distance away.
There were friendly and helpful rangers outside next to the sign, giving recommendations and answering questions. The visitor center has an outdoor movie screening on the history of the land and petroglyphs. There is a gift shop and bathrooms inside the building.
After coming to the visitor center, we decided to check out the Piedras Marcadas Canyon trail, which is an easier 1.5 miles roundtrip with up to 400 viewable petroglyphs.
Been to lots of National Parks, National Monuments, State Parks, and National Forests, but I have never met a nicer and / or knowledgeable Ranger than we did today! She was amazing, she read the crowd (this is so important as there are so many things to do in this park) and was a wealth of knowledge! We didn't get her name, but to sum up our experience, let's call it perfection! Thanks so much!
Good experience. Love the hiking trails and they are quick. Love the history this has to offer. Weather was great. Plenty of guides to seek help from.
